How a union of farmers reaches the world

OCFCU exists so that Ethiopia's smallholder coffee growers can export their own coffee, on their own terms — and keep the value where it is grown.

A union, not a middleman

Before 1999, most Ethiopian smallholders sold cherries through a long chain of traders and saw only a fraction of the final price. The Oromia Coffee Farmers' Cooperative Union was formed to change that: farmers organised into local cooperatives, and those cooperatives together built a union that could grade, market and export their coffee directly to the world.

Today OCFCU represents more than 400,000 farming families through over 50 primary cooperatives across the Oromia region — the historic birthplace of Arabica.

Who owns it

The structure is deliberately upside-down compared to a plantation. Farmers own their cooperative; the cooperatives own the union. Profit flows back down that chain — as a fair price, and as investment in the community.

Timeline

From one harvest to nine origins

1999The union is founded by a group of primary cooperatives seeking direct access to export markets.
2002First Fair Trade & Organic certified shipments reach roasters in Europe and North America.
2010Community premiums fund schools, clinics and clean-water projects across member cooperatives.
TodayNine traceable origins exported worldwide, with the majority of value returned to farming families.

The birthplace of coffee

Ethiopia is where coffee began — where wild Arabica still grows in ancient forest and where the coffee ceremony remains woven into daily life. Our farmers are the keepers of that heritage, cultivating heirloom varieties on small family plots much as generations have before them.
